When Jane came home, I was on the patio, stretched out on a lounge chair, watching Misty chase butterflies and the first fireflies of the evening.

Misty ran to greet her, tumbling over her big feet in her excitement. She waited long enough for a cursory pat, then was back to jumping after the lightning bugs.

Jane looked more like herself, if still a bit haggard, though that was to be expected after the long, hard day she’d had.

“How was the chicken fried steak?” She pulled up another lounger and eased herself onto it.

“Wonderful. I meant to bring you what I couldn’t eat but left it in Elsie’s car. Sorry.”

“Let’s hope she finds it before it sours on her. In this heat, that wouldn’t take long.” Jane lay back on the lounge chair. “And the job?”

“I think it might be fun. It’s definitely different from anything I’ve done before.” I told her about the salary offer and the bonus for helping with Wallace’s belongings. That’s when it occurred to me Jane might not have heard about Elsie’s relationship to the dead man.

“Her generosity has me puzzled. Not that she can’t afford it because she can. Just don’t let your guard down.”

I thought about sharing the remarkable change in Elsie—and my guess as to what prompted this sudden conversion—but didn’t think now was the right time. What I wanted more than anything was to know how things had gone at the Acklins’ tonight. Usually, I would pry it out of her. But there was nothing usual about the present situation.

The sky deepened in shades of the richest blues, crimsons, and purples as twilight fell. The heat of the day had gradually cooled with a gentle breeze blowing in from the north, bringing a welcome relief from the persistent high temperatures of the last several days.

Misty darted to and fro after anything that caught her attention. Now and then she would stop what she was doing and stand still, sniffing the air. Once or twice I thought I could hear a low growl, but it was gone before I could be sure.

Jane and I sat in silence. I wanted to question her but was too afraid of bringing up something that might cause the pain to return to her eyes.

I stole a look at my sister. Her face was perfectly composed as she stared up at the darkening sky. She seemed to have regained the peace and serenity she’d always exuded—the stable, no-nonsense attitude that had endured through the hardest of times.

Until the fire.

“How was dinner?” I finally asked, hoping it wouldn’t intrude, only spark a conversation.

“Pleasant. Suzanne made spaghetti in honor of Becca joining the family. She has impeccable manners—Becca, of course.”

“I noticed that earlier.”

“Um. She was very taken with Seth. They’re only six months apart in age, which Becca thought was great.”

“So they’ll be in the same class. That’ll make it easier on her in a new school.”

“Actually, Suzanne intends on picking up where her other grandmother left off home schooling. They’d already started lessons at the beginning of the month.
